Mary J. Eakin, 80, of Hughesville, passed away on Friday, Aug. 14, 2020, at Muncy Valley Hospital. Mary was born Sept. 8, 1939 in Williamsport, and was the daughter of the late John J. and Genevieve A. (Murray) McDermott. She married John "Jack" P. Eakin on June 22, 1963 and they shared 53 years of marriage. She was predeceased by her husband, John P. Eakin on Aug. 17, 2016. Mary graduated from Williamsport High School in 1957. She worked for the Prudential Insurance Company of South Williamsport, Little League World Series headquarters of South Williamsport in the insurance office and Leh's Department Store of Allentown. Upon retirement, Mary and Jack returned to the South Williamsport area and settled in Hughesville. She became very involved in grandparenting and became known as "Gram" to many of her grandchildren's friends. Mary had a deep and abiding faith in her Lord and was a member of the Church of the Resurrection of Muncy. Family meant everything to Mary. She loved to go to her grandchildren's sporting events, cook, bake and host gatherings for her family and friends. She is survived by two daughters, Denise M. (Scott) Aderhold of Hughesville, and Debra L. Eakin of Hughesville; a brother, John M. McDermott of Williamsport; five grandchildren: grandson, Logan J. Sherlinski, and granddaughters, Emily E. Aderhold, Erika N. Sherlinski, Sara M. Aderhold, and Kylie J. Sherlinski; sister-in-law, Kathy M. (David) Steinbacher of South Williamsport; and many nieces and nephews who were dear to her. In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, John P. Eakin, on Aug. 17, 2016; a daughter, Mary Eakin; a sister, Margaret A. Smith; a brother-in-law, Charles E. Smith, and a sister-in-law, Jean L. McDermott. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Church of the Resurrection, 75 Musser Lane, Muncy, with Rev. Glenn E. McCreary officiating. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Resurrection. Arrangements have been entrusted to McCarty~Thomas Funeral Home, Hughesville.
