Janet C. Kohler

January 23, 1925 - November 19, 2017

Janet C. Kohler, 92, of Hughesville, died Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Wolf Run Village, Hughesville. Born January 23, 1925, in Hughesville, she is the daughter of the late Earl Leon and Carolyn Sheldon (Hill) Kohler. Janet was a 1942 graduate of Hughesville High School. She worked as a chemical analyst at the Pennsylvania Ordnance Works, TNT Plant at White Deer after graduation. She transferred to the U.S. Rubber Company, Synthetic Division in Naugatuck, CT. She graduated from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont in 1948. Janet then worked as a chemist for Hollander Fur Co., and as a spectroscopist in Instrumental Analysis Division of Englhard Industries, Newark, NJ, until her retirement in 1983. Janet was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hughesville, and a member of the Woodland Trail Walkers, as well as many other hiking clubs in New York and New Jersey. Janet was a noted historian and was recently honored by the authors of Ghosts On The Allegheny as a friend and keeper of history. She was a life member of the East Lycoming Historical Society. She was an active member of her church and in the Tivoli Christian Ladies organization. As a young woman in New Jersey she led a Mariner Girl Scout troop as well as hiking clubs. Janet enjoyed travel throughout our country and took special interest in promoting our native Indian tribes. She enjoyed many good times with family and friends at our nearby mountain cabin all her life, and in retirement was very helpful in assisting her aging relatives. She is survived by two cousins, Nancy Van Deursen of Annandale, Va., Patricia Witherspoon of Southport, NC and admired by all their children. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church 120 S. Main St. Hughesville with friends being received at 10 am. The Rev. Cinda Brucker will officiate. Arrangements are entrusted to McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, Hughesville. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Janet's memory to Trinity Lutheran Church, Hughesville, and East Lycoming Historical Society, 66 South Main St. Hughesville.
