Hannah Mae Strother

March 12, 1926 - September 16, 2019

Hannah Mae Strother, 93, of Hughesville formerly of Stafford VA, passed away Monday, September 16, 2019 at Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of Muncy. Hannah was born March 12, 1926 in Stafford, VA and was the daughter of the late Paul and Grace C. (Gaines) Massie. She married Richard Strother on August 17, 1949 and shared 50 years of marriage. She graduated from the HH Poole School System in Stafford, VA and worked as a Special Education Teacher’s Aid in the Stafford School District retiring in 1982. Hannah was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Stafford, VA and was also the First Lady of Mount Olive Baptist Church of Orange County, VA. She loved fishing, cooking, gardening and enjoyed listening to music especially gospel music. She was a dancer, a caretaker for family and friends and at an early age of 50 she learned to drive a motorcycle as well as roller skating. She is survived by one daughter: Valerie A. Strother of St. Marcos, CA a son: Roderick C. (Sandra) Strother of Hughesville, four sisters; Doris Hill of Stafford, VA, Elsie Anderson of Clinton, MD, Jeannette Johnson of Stafford, VA, Sarah Kendall of Stafford , VA, a brother; Franklin Buckner of Fredericksburg, VA; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Hannah is predeceased by her husband Rev. Richard Strother on July 23, 1999, a son, Richard M. Strother on September 20, 1986 and by 12 siblings. The funeral services will be held 11 am on Thursday, October 3, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 414 Decatur Rd., Stafford, VA with Rev. James A. Jackson officiating. Burial will be private in Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA. Friends may call from 10 to 11 am on Thursday at the church. In Hannah‘s memory, memorial contributions may be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church Restoration Fund, 414 Decatur Rd. Stafford, VA 22554. Arrangements have been entrusted to McCarty~Thomas Funeral Home, Hughesville. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.mccartythomas.com. . .
