George O. Campbell, 86, of Hughesville, died Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. Born April 3, 1931 in Montoursville, he was a son of the late Warren N. and Pauline M. (Meeker) Campbell. He and his wife, former Margaret A. “Peg” Miller, would have celebrated 68 years of marriage on August 25, 2018. George served his country honorably in the U.S. Army, during the Korean War. After returning home, he and his brother Charles owned and operated Campbell Brother’s Trucking. George also hauled milk for 18 years; built the first car wash in Hughesville; and retired in 1991 from the State Correctional Institute Muncy, after having worked there for 27 years. A 75 year member of the Hughesville Fire Department, George held various offices and served on several committees. He was a member of the A.A.C.A., the Shikellamy Region Car Club, American Truck Historical Society, East Green Wood Valley Hunting Club and the former Hughesville Jaycee’s. He was also a charter member of Circle A Corral and the Muncy Valley Moose #866. George enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed showing his 1957 Chevrolet in local parades and collecting Hess trucks and miniature trucks and cars. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Connie L. Sawyer of Thomaston, ME; two sisters, Charlotte M. Merrick of FL, and Phyllis A. Watson of Allenwood; a brother, Ronnie E. Campbell of Pennsdale; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his son, Larry L. Campbell; two brothers, Robert N. and Charles E. Campbell; and a sister, Betty J. Bubb. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, at the Friends Church, 137 S. Third St., Hughesville, with Rev. Dan Cale officiating. Burial will follow in Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water Street, Hughesville. The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions be made to the Friends Church, 137 S.
