September 17, 1933 - March 27, 2019
Eugene G. Hiduk, 85, of New Albany, died Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Born September 17, 1933 in Olyphant, he was a son of the late John and Margaret (Wilding) Hiduk. He and his wife, the former Patricia A. Van-Derpoel, celebrated 46 years of marriage on November 25, 2018. Gene was a graduate of Wyalusing High School, Class of 1952, and attended Penn State University. Following his course studies at Penn State, he started working as a milk tester for DHIA of Bradford County. In 1953, Gene joined the U.S. Airforce and was sent to Hawaii, where he served his country honorably during the Korean War. After being discharged in 1957, Gene returned home and was employed as a computer operator for various local companies. He then sold mutual funds and real estate, before retiring from the PA Department of Human Services as a caseworker supervisor. Giving back to his community was very important to Gene. He served as mayor and council member for the Borough of New Albany for several years. Gene was also very dedicated to the children of New Albany and was a founding member of the Children’s Fund, which sponsored the annual Charlie Wiles Fishing Derby and community Halloween and Christmas Parties. Gene was a former member the Albany Rotary Village Corps. and served on the Bradford County Board of Assistance. Gene was an avid fisherman who enjoyed traveling to Canada and Cap May, NJ, for his annual fishing trips. He was also an avid hunter and against his better judgment, took his wife on a one night honeymoon as the first day of buck season started the following day and he needed to be home to go hunting. Socializing was one Gene’s greatest gifts. He could often be found talking with complete strangers and make them feel like they knew him for years. Gardening and reading were also favorite pastimes of Gene’s. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Lisa (Steven) Ruszin of Pittston; a son, Rick (Mike Houser) Hiduk of Meshoppen; a sister, Lois (Edward) McPherson of Monroeton; a brother, Thomas (Laura) Hiduk of Wyalusing; and a granddaughter, Samantha Ruszin. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by two brothers, William Hiduk and Charles Hiduk. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, at New Albany Baptist Church, 166 Main St., New Albany, with Rev. Terry R. Van Horn officiating. Burial will follow in Wyalusing Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 119 Carpenter St., Dushore. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.mccartythomas.com.
