October 12, 1924 - October 22, 2018
Eleanor R. Kough, 94, of New Albany, died Monday, October 22, 2018 at Dar-Way Nursing Home, Forksville. Born October 12, 1924 in Steelton, she was a daughter of the late Harry Sr. and Dora (Smith) Kough. Eleanor was a graduate of Steelton High School, Class of 1943. Following her graduation she was employed at the Middletown Air Force Depot from 1943 to 1946. She would then work at several Steelton area businesses, including Pomeroy’s Dept. Store as a sales clerk and then with the Pennsylvania Nurses Association as a secretary. On March 20, 1981, Eleanor would retire from the Pennsylvania Dept. of Public Welfare where she had been employed for 20 years as a secretary. Eleanor lived most of her life in the Harrisburg area before moving to New Albany in 1996 to be close to her family. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Steelton, and was an active member of the New Albany Baptist Church, where she held many positions, including head usher, and treasurer of the parish. Eleanor also attended adult Sunday school, taught vacation bible school, sent cards to the shut-ins on behalf of the church, and was a member of the American Baptist Woman’s Ministries. Giving back to her community was very important to Eleanor. She volunteered at the New Albany Elementary School for 12 years, serving as a reading helper for the first grade students. Traveling was a passion of Eleanor’s, as she took many bus trips throughout the United States. However, her most memorable trip was when she visited the Holy Lands. This was a dream come true for Eleanor. In her free time, she enjoyed reading books and playing Scrabble. In May, 2011, Eleanor moved to the Sullivan Terrace, Dushore, where she enjoyed reading to people and attending the many activities there. In September, 2018, Eleanor would move again to the Dar-Way Nursing Home. Anyone who would visit Eleanor would often be reminded of her famous quote, “Pride cometh before a fall”. Surviving are three nieces, Susan J. (Gary) Miller of New Albany, Mary (James) Main of Lexington, VA, and Kimberly (Kevin) Rowley of Clayton, NC; nine great-nieces and nephews; and 15 great-great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Eleanor was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Kough Jr.; a sister, Arlene Jones; a brother-in-law, James Jones; a niece, JoAnn Buckalew; and a great-nephew, Jimmy Miller. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, November 4, at New Albany Baptist Church, 166 Main St., New Albany, with Rev. Terry R. Van Horn officiating. Burial will follow in Laddsburg Cemetery. Friends may call from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Sunday, November 4, at the church. The family will provide the flowers and suggest memorial contributions to the New Albany Baptist Church, 166 Main St., New Albany, PA 18833.
